The Yellow Durag Series
(I'm Not Always Okay)
The Yellow Durag series is a series of self-portraits I created to illustrate the way my mental health intersects with time and space. Using an oppositional gaze, I am exploring and making a display out of the dimensions of the blank spaces in my mind; the moments in which I get lost in my thoughts, which sometimes feel inescapable. The spaces in which exist purely for myself. A world that I am sharing with the viewer, who is only welcome because the image exists. My gaze transcends each frame, emphasizing my choice to look back at the viewer with a sobering expression that signals my awareness that I am being seen. I’m not always okay and that’s ok. I’m not always put together, but I’m still here.
